On Friday, 15 July, I had the great pleasure of joining the winners of the 2022 WineGB Awards at the competition’s annual Awards Lunch at the impressive Drapers Hall, London.

The WineGB Awards is the national competition for the English and Welsh wine industry. Organised and run by WineGB, the aim and purpose of the Awards is to “send out a positive message of the quality, consistency and variety of our wines”.

Record number of entries

This year saw a record number of entries, with well over 100 producers entering, 11 of these for the first time. Of the 290 medals awarded, medals awarded, 139 (48%) went to sparkling and 152 (52%) to still wine. There were 36 gold, 114 silver and 141 bronze medals awarded. View the medal winners.

Lots of enthusiasm for the future

Two members of the Bevica team attended the WineGB Awards: myself and Jon Bain, our Sales Director. We agreed that there was a great deal of enthusiasm in the room for the future of British wine. WineGB sees now as the beginning of an era for the wine industry in Great Britain. The climate is getting better for wines, mainly sparkling, and the knowledge and the industry are getting stronger. As a result, the wines grown in the UK are becoming better quality and more accessible to both the on and off trade markets.

We also had the great pleasure of sitting at the same table as Artelium who scooped four trophies. They were awarded the Newcomer Trophy, along with the Best Blanc de Blancs and Top Sparkling of 2022. It was also crowned Supreme Champion of the 2022 WineGB Awards for its Blanc de Blancs 2015.
