On Friday, 19 July, I had the great pleasure of joining the winners of the WineGB Awards 2024 at the competition’s annual Awards Luncheon and Ceremony at the impressive Drapers Hall, London.

The WineGB Awards is the national competition for the English and Welsh wine industry. Organised and run by WineGB, the aim and purpose of the Awards is to “send out a positive message of the quality, consistency and variety of our wines”.

Great wines from all across England and Wales

This year the WineGB Awards 2024 saw a record number of competition entries received and gold medals awarded. A list of the medal winners can be found here. The Awards Ceremony also saw trophies being awarded to a range of wineries and vineyards from across Great Britain.  We are delighted that Bevica client, Chapel Down picked up seven trophies on the day, including the Supreme Champion trophy for their Kit’s Coty Coeur de Cuvée 2016.

English and Welsh wine industry: never been better

One of the key takeaways from this year’s Awards for me was that English and Welsh wines have never been better. This year’s medal winners were produced in 33 different counties across England and Wales, 28 in England and five in Wales. Gold medal winners were spread across 18 counties from Cornwall, Dorset, and Berkshire to East Sussex, Suffolk and North Yorkshire. Kent and Hampshire were victorious in the gold medal tally with nine medals each.

Another key takeaway was the growth in standing of the English and Welsh still wine industry in the last year. Of the 56 gold medals awarded, 21 were given to still wines. This is more than double the figure awarded to still wines in 2023! It is clear that the UK is well on its way to being one of the best wine-producing regions of the world for still white and rose wine, as well as sparkling.

I also had the great honour, on the day, of presenting the award for the Best Contract Producer to Wiston Estate. Congratulations to them on their achievement!
